Today the US banner comprises of thirteen horizontal stripes; seven red stripes alternating with six white stripes representing the first 13 colonies. The stars represent the 50 states associated with Union.

The colors associated with the banner are symbolic too: Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.
